The Touch UI register

Switch any register to Touch UI to get a full-screen, finger-friendly sale screen with a product grid, a cart panel and a quick payment flow — including an offline mode that keeps selling when the connection drops.

Touch UI is a second layout for the sale screen, built for tablets and touch-screen terminals. It puts a large product grid on one side, the cart on the other, and turns payment into a few big buttons. The classic sale screen described in ringing up a sale is unchanged and still available — the layout is chosen per register, so one store can run a touch terminal at the counter and a keyboard-and-scanner register in the back office at the same time.

The Touch UI register: four items in the cart panel on the left, the product grid with category tabs on the right, and the payment bar along the bottom

Everything a sale can do on the classic screen it can still do here: discounts, price overrides, returns, layaways, gift cards, work orders and deliveries all behave the same way. Only the layout and the way you reach those actions change.

Turn Touch UI on for a register

The layout is a property of the register, not of the employee or the browser:

  1. Go to Locations in the left navigation menu and edit the location the register belongs to.
  2. Open the Registers table. Each row now has a POS UI column.
  3. Set that register's POS UI to Touch UI. Leave the others on Default.
  4. Click Save.

The next time someone chooses that register on the Sales screen, the touch layout loads. Choosing a register set to Default loads the classic screen. Registers are covered in more detail in locations and registers and registers and cash management.

Because the setting lives on the register, the same employee gets the touch layout at the touch terminal and the classic layout everywhere else, with no separate sign-in or preference to remember.

The screen

The touch register is divided into two panels:

  • Products — the product grid, filling most of the screen. A vertical category rail sits between the cart and the grid; tapping a category drills into it, and tapping an item adds it to the cart. A search box above the grid takes a scan, an item number or a name, exactly like the classic screen.
  • Cart — the running sale down the side, with each line's name, quantity and total, the sale totals underneath, and the payment buttons at the bottom.

Above the cart is the customer area. With no customer attached it reads Walk-in Customer (or No Customer Selected), and tapping it opens the customer search. The Menu button on the cart toolbar holds the actions that do not fit on screen — trade-ins, gift card sale, refill and balance check, Suspended Sales, Work Orders, Orders (deliveries), the sale reports search, and the cash drawer.

The grid is built from your categories and items, so the settings that shape the classic item grid — hidden categories, out-of-stock items, images on or off — shape this one too. Each category shows a capped number of products so the grid stays fast on a large catalog; use the search box for anything the grid does not show.

Take payment

Tap Make Payment to open the payment panel. It lists your payment types as buttons in the order set under Store Config → Sales → Payment Type Order (Sales), with an amount keypad, Amount Tendered and Change Due. Split payments work the same way as on the classic screen: add one payment, then another, until Amount Due reaches zero. Card payments run through whichever processor the register is configured for — see taking card payments.

If the customer has cards on file, the payment panel offers them in a Saved Credit Cards list along with Do not use saved card. See saved cards on file.

Edit the customer without leaving the sale

Tapping the attached customer opens a small edit panel with First Name, Last Name, Company, Mobile and Address. Save it and the sale continues with the corrected record — you do not have to open the Customers module and come back. Loyalty status and store account balance, when the customer has them, are shown inline in the same panel. Full customer records are still edited in customer profiles.

Offline Mode

The touch register can keep selling while the internet is down. When the connection drops, the screen shows Offline Mode and sales are held in the browser on that device: items are added, totals and taxes are calculated, payment is recorded and a receipt can be printed.

When the connection returns:

  • Sync Offline Sales — the button in the action bar, with a count of how many sales are waiting. Press it to send them to the store.
  • Edit Offline Sales — opens the list of sales taken offline so you can review or correct one before it syncs.

A few limits are worth knowing before you rely on it. Offline sales are stored in that browser on that device, so do not clear the browser's data and do not expect to sync them from a different tablet. Anything that needs the server as it happens — a live card authorization, a gift card balance check, an integrated loyalty lookup — cannot run while offline. Sync as soon as the connection is back, because inventory and reports only reflect the sale once it has been sent. The classic register's own offline behaviour is described in selling when the internet is down.

Kitchen Display

If your store runs the kitchen display, suspended sales taken on a touch register appear on the board like any other. See the Kitchen Display System.

Common questions

Can an employee switch between the two layouts? Not from the sale screen. The layout follows the register, so switching means choosing a different register — or changing that register's POS UI setting under Locations.

Do permissions work differently on the touch register? No. Every permission is enforced identically; an employee who cannot give a discount on the classic screen cannot give one here either. See permissions and permission templates.

A product is missing from the grid. Each category shows a limited number of products so the grid stays responsive. Search for the item by name or number, or scan its barcode — the search reaches your whole catalog. Also check that the item is not hidden from the item grid or filtered out by the out-of-stock setting.

Nothing happens when I press Sync Offline Sales. The device is still offline, or the sales have already synced. The count next to the button shows how many are waiting; if it reads zero, everything has been sent.
