There really isn't a way to do this. The barcode scanner is like a keyboard so it doesn't communicate with application directly. Your workaround is the best solution.

In about one or two months, we have a customizable drag and drop receipt designer The only way to modify it now is if you have the download version you can modify application/views/sales/receipt.php
