The Kitchen Display System

The Kitchen Display turns suspended sales into a live board for the kitchen or prep station, where orders and individual line items move through New, Preparing, Ready and Delivered.

The Kitchen Display System (KDS) is a full-screen board for a kitchen or prep station. Orders taken at the register appear on it as they are suspended, staff move each order — or each individual line on the order — through the preparation stages, and the register sees the same statuses back on the suspended sale.

The Kitchen Display in split view: New Orders on the left, In Preparation / Ready on the right, each ticket showing its items, sale type and a running timer

It is designed for a screen of its own: a tablet or monitor mounted where the food is made, left open all day.

Turn it on

  1. Go to Store Config in the left navigation menu and open the Sales section.
  2. Tick Enable Kitchen Display.
  3. Click Save.

With the setting off, the board is unavailable and anyone who opens its address is told Kitchen Display is not enabled. Please contact admin.

Open the board

Once enabled, the sale screen's menu gains a Kitchen Display entry. It opens the board in a new browser tab, which is what you want on a dedicated kitchen screen — leave that tab open and use the register in the other one.

The board shows orders for the location the employee is currently logged in to. A store with two kitchens runs one board per location, each signed in to its own location.

How orders reach the board

An order lands on the board when the sale is suspended at the register. That is the same mechanism described in suspended sales, layaways and estimates — a suspended sale is a ticket that has been sent but not yet paid out and closed. Suspended sale types let you separate dine-in from takeout or delivery, and the board can be filtered by them.

Orders taken on a Touch UI register reach the board the same way as ones from the classic sale screen.

The four statuses

Every order, and every line item on it, sits in one of four statuses:

Status Meaning
New Just arrived; nobody has started it.
Preparing Being made.
Ready Finished and waiting to be handed over.
Delivered Handed to the customer; the order leaves the board.

Order cards carry buttons that move everything on the order at once — Start Preparing, Mark Ready, and mark the whole order delivered — and each line has its own small buttons for the same moves, plus back-arrows (Return to New, Return to Preparing) for when something is bumped by mistake. Being able to advance one line at a time is the point when half the ticket is fries and the other half needs ten minutes on the grill.

Delivered, completed, cancelled and refunded orders drop off the board automatically, so what remains on screen is genuinely outstanding work.

The layout

By default the board is in split view: New Orders on one side, In Preparation / Ready on the other. Turning split view off gives each stage the full width with tabs to move between them — easier to read on a small or portrait screen.

Each card shows the order, the customer, the sale type, its line items with quantities and modifiers, and a running timer since the order arrived.

KDS Settings

The KDS Settings panel holds the per-screen options. They are saved in that browser, so each kitchen screen can be set up differently:

Display Options

  • Enable Split View — two columns versus full-width tabs, as above.
  • Full Screen Mode / Go Fullscreen — hides the browser chrome so the board fills the screen.
  • Dark Mode — a dark palette, easier on the eyes in a dim kitchen and on a screen that stays on all day.
  • Sound Notifications — plays a sound for new orders, status changes and orders becoming ready.
  • Refresh Interval (seconds) — how often the board re-checks for work when it is refreshing on a timer.

Timer Settings

  • Warning Threshold (minutes) — after this long, an order's timer turns amber.
  • Danger Threshold (minutes) — after this long, it turns red.

Set the two thresholds to your own service targets; they are what turns the board into a prompt rather than just a list.

Filters

Above the board:

  • Filter by Category — show only orders containing items from a chosen category, so a grill station is not reading the drinks. All Categories is the default. Orders made up entirely of item kits or combos are matched on the items inside them, so a combo containing a burger still reaches the grill board.
  • Filter by Sale Type — choose which suspended sale types to show; All Types is the default.

Press Apply Filters to put them into effect. Filters are per screen, so the grill board and the expo board can each keep their own.

Live updates

Where real-time updates are available, the board changes the instant an order is sent or a status is changed on another screen — no waiting for a refresh. If that live connection is ever unavailable or drops, the board falls back to refreshing itself on the Refresh Interval timer and catches up on anything it missed as soon as the connection returns. In practice you do not have to do anything: the board keeps itself current either way.

Common questions

An order is not appearing on the board. Check three things: the sale was suspended (not completed), the register is at the same location as the board, and the board's category or sale-type filter is not excluding it. Filters are the usual culprit — set both back to All to confirm.

Can the board be used without a touchscreen? Yes. Every button works with a mouse, and the board is perfectly usable on an ordinary monitor.

Does moving an order to Ready charge the customer? No. Statuses only track preparation. The sale is still open and is paid out at the register in the usual way when the ticket is unsuspended and completed.

Sounds are not playing. Turn on Sound Notifications in KDS Settings, and check the browser has not muted the tab — most browsers block sound until someone has interacted with the page, so click anywhere on the board once after loading it.
