The Label Designer is a drag-and-drop editor for custom label layouts. Start from a sized template, drag fields like name, price, barcode and QR code onto the canvas, fine-tune them in the properties panel, save multiple designs and print them from items, receivings or a label printer via PrintNode.

The standard label options in barcodes and labels let you toggle content on and off, but the layout is fixed. The Label Designer removes that limit: it is a visual editor where you place each element exactly where you want it on a canvas the size of your real label stock, then print the result like any other label.

Availability and permissions

The Label Designer is a plan entitlement. When your plan does not include it, the Label Designs module redirects to a plan-upgrade notice, and the Label Designer Custom Label Printer option does not appear in label menus. Where a trial is offered, a banner reads "You can start a N-day trial of Label Designer" with a Start trial button — starting the trial requires a user with Store Config access. Within the app, access is controlled by the Label Designs module permissions, assigned per employee like any other module. Search Label Designs gates opening the manage list and browsing designs; Add, Update gates creating designs, opening the designer canvas and saving layout changes; Delete gates deleting designs (and undeleting them). Create a label design

1. Open the Label Designs module.

2. Click New Label Design.

3. Pick a template from Select Label Template. Templates set the real printed size in inches:

4. Give the design a Name, leave Active checked so it is offered at print time, and save. The designer canvas opens.

Templates are starting points, not constraints — everything can be moved, resized or deleted afterwards. Designs you no longer need can be deleted from the manage list (and undeleted later — deleting never breaks past prints).

Design the layout

The designer shows an Available Fields palette on one side, the label canvas in the middle, and a Properties panel for the selected element. Drag fields from the palette onto the canvas; each element is positioned and styled independently.

Basic fields: Company (company name), Unit Price, Dual Pricing Price (only offered when Show dual pricing on barcode labels is enabled in Store Config), Promo Price, Barcode, QR Code, Name (item name), Item Number (SKU), Weight, Variation Name and Custom Text (free text you type yourself).

Advanced fields: Product ID, Category, Supplier, Manufacturer, Description, Size, Length, Width, Height, Weight Unit, Start Date, End Date, Expire Days, the item's Custom Field 1–10 values, Website, Company Logo (image), Address, Phone and Email.

At print time each field is filled with the real value from the item being printed — the price field prints that item's price, the barcode field encodes that item's barcode number, and so on.

Editing tools

• Move and resize — drag an element to move it (hold Shift to lock to one axis); drag the corner handle to resize (hold Shift to keep the aspect ratio). Double-click a text element to edit its content; double-click Custom Text to type your own.
• Properties panel — exact X/Y position and width/height, typography (font family, font size, weight, text color), text alignment inside the element, text transform, rotation in degrees (with quick 0/90/180/270 buttons), and full-width toggles for text fields. Barcode Settings and QR Code Settings control the code value and the barcode font size.
• Alignment tools — align selected or all elements to the left edge, center or right edge; distribute elements with equal horizontal spacing; Auto Arrange re-lays out every element neatly centered.
• Assistant lines — toggle alignment guides that appear as you drag, snapping elements to each other and to the label edges.
• Zoom — zoom in/out (Ctrl +/−) and reset to 100% (Ctrl+0) without changing the printed size.
• Undo/redo — Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y, so you can experiment freely. Other shortcuts: Ctrl+A select all, Delete removes the selected element, Enter edits text, Ctrl+S saves.
• Documentation — the designer links to a built-in user guide covering all of the above.

Click Save Design (or Ctrl+S) to store the layout, and Print Preview to see exactly what will print before using label stock.

Print with a design

Designs print from the same places as standard labels — see barcodes and labels for each path:

• Items list — select items, open Labels, choose Label Designer Custom Label Printer.
• Single item — open the item popup, click Print next to Generate Barcodes, set the number of copies (per variation if the item has variations), then click Custom Label.
• Receiving — on the completed receiving's receipt, choose Label Designer Custom Printer to print for exactly what arrived.

The print page shows your active designs as cards — click the one to use, and the labels re-render in that layout. What happens next depends on your printing setup:

• With PrintNode configured (a PrintNode API key plus a label printer selected on the register under Locations): set Number of Copies and click Print with PrintNode. The labels are converted to PDF pages matching the design's exact width and height and sent straight to the label printer — no print dialog. "Labels sent to printer." confirms the job; "No PrintNode printer configured." means the register has no label printer selected. With Enable Test Print checked in Store Config → PrintNode, a Test PDF button appears alongside — it renders the same labels through the same PDF pipeline and opens the result in a new tab without sending anything to the printer, so you can proof the layout before spending label stock.
• Without PrintNode: click Print and use the browser's print dialog, with margins set to 0 and the paper size matching the design. See receipt printers, cash drawers and PrintNode for PrintNode setup.

Related Store Config settings

• Show dual pricing on barcode labels — must be on for the Dual Pricing Price field to appear in the palette.
• Label designer markup/markdown price — the default value used for the marked up or marked down price field in the designer; include a currency symbol if you want one printed.
• The barcode content settings (ID to show on barcode, zerofill and so on) apply to the number encoded in designer barcodes exactly as they do to standard labels.

Designer or standard labels?

If the built-in layout already shows what you need, stick with the standard options — they configure faster and print from items, receivings and counts alike. Reach for the Label Designer when placement matters: branded labels with a logo, dual-pricing shelf tags with the deal price large, QR labels that pair a code with exactly the text you choose, or several label formats (jewelry stickers, shelf tags, shipping labels) saved side by side and picked at print time.

Common questions

Why don't I see the Label Designs module or the Custom Label option? Either your plan does not include the Label Designer entitlement (look for the trial banner, or see billing and subscription), or your employee account lacks the Label Designs module permission.

Can I have more than one design? Yes — save as many as you like and keep them all Active. At print time the print page lists every active design as a card and you click the one to use.

How do I print my design on a specific label size? Pick the template matching your stock, or Custom Size and enter the width and height in inches (the designer works in inches with decimal precision). The printed page is generated at exactly that size.

Does the design print the real item data? Yes. The fields are placeholders in the designer; when you print from items or a receiving, each label is filled with that item's actual name, price, barcode number, custom fields and so on.

Can it print automatically without the browser print dialog? Yes, through PrintNode: connect PrintNode, select the label printer on the register in Locations, and use Print with PrintNode with the number of copies you need.

Can I show a QR code and a barcode on the same label? Yes — both are independent fields; drag both onto the canvas and size them separately. Keep codes reasonably large or they may not scan.

I deleted a design by mistake — is it gone? No. The manage list can show deleted designs, and deleted designs can be undeleted.
