Price tiers and customer pricing

A price tier gives a group of customers — wholesale, VIP — their own pricing, defined as percent off or cost-plus and overridable per item, kit, category or location. Assign tiers on the profile or let auto-tiering do it by lifetime sales.

Some pricing depends on what you're selling; some depends on who is buying. Price tiers handle the second kind: wholesale accounts, VIP members, staff pricing, online pricing — any group that should see different prices than walk-in retail. Assign the tier once on the customer's profile, and the right prices apply automatically every time that customer is on a sale, with no cashier action required.

Create a tier

  1. Open Store Config in the left menu.
  2. Type tier in the search bar at the top — the Price Tiers section comes up.
  3. Click Add tier and enter a Tier Name you'll recognize later (for example Wholesale or Loyalty Customer).
  4. Fill in exactly one of the three default pricing columns:
    • Default Percent Off — takes the item's selling price and applies a flat percent discount.
    • Default Cost Plus Percent — takes the item's cost price and marks it up by a flat percent (the classic wholesale formula).
    • Default Cost Plus Fixed Amount — takes the item's cost price and adds a flat currency amount.
  5. Click Save in the bottom right.

Once a tier exists, the default formula prices the whole catalog for that tier — you don't have to touch individual items unless you want exceptions. Drag rows by the sort handle to reorder tiers; deleting a tier from this table requires an items or item-kits Delete permission.

Worked example: you promise customers who've spent over $2,000 a 10% discount on everything. Create a tier named Loyalty Customer with Default Percent Off = 10, assign it on those customers' profiles, and every item drops 10% the moment such a customer is added to a sale.

Every Price Tiers setting

Alongside the tier table, the Price Tiers section holds:

  • Auto Tier Ranges — rules that map Min Lifetime Sales/Max Lifetime Sales ranges to a Price Tier (click Add Auto Tier Range to add one). See "Assign tiers automatically" below.
  • Calculate Tier Ranges For Customers — the button that applies those ranges to your customer base.
  • Override Tier Name on Receipt — a single label that replaces every tier's name on customer receipts.
  • Hide Tier On Receipt — keeps tier pricing lines off receipts entirely; see customizing receipts.
  • Default Tier Percent Type for excel import — when an imported tier value has a percent sign, treat it as Percent Off or Cost Plus Percent.
  • Default Tier Fixed Amount for Excel Import — when an imported tier value has no percent sign, treat it as Fixed Amount or Cost Plus Fixed Amount. Both import defaults matter when bulk-loading item tier prices; see importing your data.
  • Round tier Prices to 2 decimals — keeps computed tier prices at normal currency precision (a 10% discount turning $2.456 into $2.46).
  • Default Tier — appears once tiers exist; the selected tier applies to sales that have no tiered customer attached, effectively making a tier your register's base pricing.
  • Excluded From Markup/Markdown — tiers selected here are skipped by bulk markup/markdown price changes.

Assign a tier to a customer

  1. Go to Customers → Customers in the left menu.
  2. Click Edit on the customer.
  3. Scroll to the Tier Type dropdown and pick the tier. Every tier you've created appears here.
  4. Click Save.

Each customer holds at most one tier. Changing the field requires the Edit Tier permission on the Customers module — see permissions and templates. The customer Excel import/export carries the tier by name, so you can retier in bulk; names must match exactly or the tier is left unassigned.

Assign tiers automatically by lifetime spend

Auto-tiering turns tiers into a spend-based membership program:

  1. In Store Config → Price Tiers, click Add Auto Tier Range.
  2. Pick the Price Tier and set Min Lifetime Sales and Max Lifetime Sales — for example VIP for $2,000–$10,000, Platinum above that.
  3. Save, then click Calculate Tier Ranges For Customers. Every customer's lifetime sales total is evaluated and their Tier Type is set to the matching range's tier ("Customer tiers have been recalculated successfully").

Re-run the calculation periodically — it's a one-click way to promote customers whose history has earned it.

Override tier prices per item, kit, category or location

The tier's default formula rarely fits everything. Overrides exist at four levels, and a more specific override wins over the tier default:

  • Per item — edit the item and open its Pricing tab (creating items). Each tier shows a calculation-method dropdown — Fixed Price, Percent Off, Cost Plus Percent, Cost Plus Fixed Amount — plus a value. Fixed Price makes the value the tier price outright; the other three compute from selling price or cost as named. This adjusts only how this item prices when the tier is triggered; the Store Config default and the item's normal selling price are untouched.
  • Per item kit — the same tier fields on the kit's pricing section; see item kits and modifiers.
  • Per category — category-level tier pricing from Items → Manage Categories, e.g. a deeper wholesale discount on accessories than on hardware; see categories, tags and manufacturers.
  • Per location — the item's and kit's Locations tab accepts tier prices per store, so the same tier can price differently in different locations.

Tiers at the register

When a tiered customer is attached to a sale, their tier's prices replace regular prices immediately, and the tier shows on the receipt (unless renamed or hidden by the settings above). Cashiers with the Edit Sale Tier permission on the Sales module can also change tiers mid-sale: an Item Tiers selector switches the tier for the whole sale, and each line's Tier value can be edited per item. Without the permission, tiers are read-only at the register — which is how you keep unofficial discounts under control. For another per-customer pricing tool, the register's Cart items historical price for this customer view shows what the attached customer actually paid for the cart's items on past visits — covered in ringing up a sale. For one-off price changes that aren't tier-related, see discounts and price overrides.

Tiers online and in reports

  • Ecommerce: in Store Config, under the Ecommerce Platform settings, pick an Online Price Tier — your webstore then syncs that tier's prices instead of retail, so wholesale customers can see wholesale prices online. See how ecommerce sync works.
  • Reports: Reports → Tiers (the Tiers Summary Report, gated by the Tiers report permission) shows how your tiers are configured and used, so you can audit the pricing you've promised. See running reports.

To see every tier's price for every item side by side, go to Items, open the menu and choose Price List. The list shows Item Id, Name, Category, Product ID, Item Number, Supplier and Selling Price, then one column per tier — named after the tier and showing the exact price the register would charge, item-level overrides included. Item variations get their own rows. The list honours whatever search or category filter is active in the Items list, so filter first to price just one slice of the catalog. Print it with the Print button, or click Excel Export for a spreadsheet of the entire list — a ready-made wholesale price sheet to hand to tiered customers. The menu entry appears for employees with the Items module's Add, Update permission.

Edit or delete tiers

Edit any tier's name or default values right in the Store Config → Price Tiers table and click Save — changes apply across the software immediately, including to customers already assigned. To remove a tier, click Delete in its row. Deleting cannot be undone and strips the tier from every item, item kit, category, customer and ecommerce assignment that used it.

Tiers or price rules?

Use tiers when the price depends on who the customer is, permanently. Use price rules and promotions when the price depends on dates or conditions — a weekend sale, buy-one-get-one, quantity breaks. They work together: a VIP customer can still hit a storewide promotion, and price rules can even exclude specific tiers.

Common questions

Why isn't the tier price applying at the register? Check three things: the customer on the sale actually has the tier set in Tier Type; the tier has a default formula or an override for the item; and no cashier changed the sale's tier (visible in the Item Tiers selector).

Can a customer belong to two tiers? No — one Tier Type per customer. If someone needs mixed pricing, use per-item overrides within their tier, or the per-customer item-access price overrides on their profile.

Do tier prices show on the receipt? Yes, labeled with the tier's name by default. Use Override Tier Name on Receipt to show a friendlier label for all tiers, or Hide Tier On Receipt to hide tier pricing from customers entirely.

How do I give wholesale prices online? Set Online Price Tier in the Store Config ecommerce settings to your wholesale tier — the connected webstore syncs those prices; see how ecommerce sync works.

What's the difference between Percent Off and Cost Plus Percent? Percent Off discounts down from the item's selling price. Cost Plus Percent builds up from the item's cost price. Wholesale programs usually use cost-plus; VIP discounts usually use percent-off.

I deleted a tier by mistake — can I restore it? No. Deleting a tier is permanent and clears it from all items and customers. Recreate it and re-assign; the customer Excel import can restore assignments in bulk.

Can tier prices end up with odd fractions of a cent? They can when computed from percentages — turn on Round tier Prices to 2 decimals to keep every tier price at normal currency precision.
