It sounds like item kits could be a good solution for you.

Not exactly what I was thinking. I don't what to have to create other part numbers or kits if I don't have to. I'm thinking more like a an option where I can select something like each, case, package... but without having to create more parts in the system. I thought maybe variations could work but maybe I didn't configure something correctly or it does not have that capability.

Variations probably won't work because each variation pulls from its own set of inventory. You want one set of inventory correct?

That's correct. Basically, I want an option that would allow me to enter an item into a sale and then be able to change what unit it is being sold in. So for instance, I would sell one package but it would account for how many items make up the package individually. I could also then just sell that same item as eaches based on what unit I want to sell the product in.

Kits can pretty much do that. Example

    Item Name: ABC Widget

    Item Kits:

1/2 Dozen ABC Widgets (Abc Widget item x 6)

Dozen ABC Widgets (ABC Widget x 12)

When you add the kits it will remove 6 or 12 per quantity and will show up on receipt as one line item. (If you put in the prices for the kits)

I understand how kits could work for this but that means I would have to create a new kit for every item and each variations. Say it can be sold as an each, package or case. I really want an option to be able to do with where I only need to create one item. I guess that does not exist.

as of now that doesn't exist but I have marked it as something we can consider for future

I think it would be a great addition. Would be great for inventory accounting. Instead of entering say 25 eaches they could just enter 1 case and it would automatically add 25 into inventory.

Something you can do now is this

    Item name: ABC Widgets

    UPC/EAN/ISBN: 1234

You could type in 6*1234 then press enter and it would add 6 of abc widgets. I know this isn't exactly what you want but this is a shortcut.

So if you could define something such as a case has 6 units and then you would select a case and then if you sold 2 cases it would deduct 12 from inventory?

I guess I am seeing why kits don't work. In your case you would have the following:

    1. Item "ABC Widgets"

    2. Item Kit "ABC Widgets Case" which has the item "ABC Widgets" --> quantity of what is in a case.

Then when you sell the case you would just put in the number of cases and it would do what you need.

I guess I am not seeing why this doesn't work.

This solution would be an option however again, I don't want to have to create a kit for every item that has a case quantity. I would much rather just search for a product then be able to change it to a case quantity. Also, if staff is entering a sale it's much easier for them to scan the barcode for that product then change it to a case quantity.

Also for inventory purposes. A retailer might receive a case of something but sell it as eaches. Rather then enter say 5 eaches they could just say they received a full case.

Basically, I want to eliminate having to create a bunch of extra part numbers in the system. This create more items to search for in the system as well as the potential for inventory errors since someone may sell an item as a case instead of just an each.

Ok got it; I will see what I can come up with. Might use item kits as the backend data structure for this but it will still be seamless. Not 100% sure yet on the implementation.

A few final thoughts on this. Not sure where this configuration would be located but I feel it should be in the item itself. I feel just like with variations, you should be able to add as many different selling options as needed. In the price tab you could keep that the same but add an option below with something like additional pricing options. They you just enter a name, price and quantity. Maybe there is an option to default it to sell a certain way. Say maybe it always defaults to a case but sometimes you want to sell just a single unit. Ideally it would be great if you could also receive in items as different selling options as well.

I have completed 1st iteration of feature for version 17.1 (2 versions from now and 17.0 is coming out this week)

    Can you try it at?

    https://demo.phppointofsalestaging.com

You can make a new item and then click variations tab to setup quantity variations. The cost and selling price fields are optional.

You can then sell or receive the item and will be able to pick unit type. Please let me know if this works for you

Got a chance to play with this. Does exactly what I was thinking. Also noticed that you have developed the option to select what columns you wish to display in reports. This is a much appreciated addition. Will really help when I am running reports. Can't wait for both to be released officially.

I like this but I seem to be missing something...where and how do you select the unit type?

OK..got it.....BUT,  if I try and sell the item in another UOM, I cannot without a new sale entirely.  It always auto updates the item quantity if you add/scan the item for another sale.  This has always bothered me a little....can't do a BOGO without manually adjusting the price and then it doesn't reflect really on the receipt.

It would be nice to be able to sell the Variation units separately for us.  In the case of this item, I set up 3 UOM and could easily sell two of them at once....bag and lb.

Check the box "item has serial number" for that item
